What
is Intermissions?
-
The first “Intermissions”
conference probably was held in 1935 or 1936, but the first one of
which we have a record was held March 2-4 (Tuesday-Thursday), 1937. It
was called the “Conference of Evangelical Missionaries” and was held at
“Colegio La Patria” in Guatemala City. The conference in 1938 was
called “The Intermission Conference.” The program of the early
conferences included devotional times, presentation and discussion of
topics of current interest, and business sessions. For many years the
conference was headed by a committee of different mission personnel and
had formal membership of each participating mission organization.
-
For many years now,
Intermissions has provided the English-speaking
Evangelical missionary community in Guatemala a unique
weekend of inspiration, encouragement, and fellowship. Intermissions
continues to be something that many missionaries look forward to each
year. With a Bible conference format, spiritual refreshment and renewal
are provided for all ages. With many missionaries heavily involved in
their individual ministries, they have few opportunities for English
Bible teaching, for meeting with other missionaries also serving in
Guatemala, and for such as singing some of their favorite hymns and
choruses in English.
Purpose
of Intermissions
-
to provide a weekend
“spiritual retreat” for missionaries and their children.
-
to
provide a time and place where missionaries working in Guatemala can
“network” with each other, and can learn of, and from, each other’s
ministries.
Who
is Intermissions for?
-
the English-speaking
Evangelical missionary community in Guatemala - English speaking
ex-patriot missionaries, who have come from outside of Guatemala –
primarily from the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, Australia, etc.
-
missionary guests from
neighboring countries may attend, partly depending on available room at
the host facility.
Sponsors
of Intermissions
-
In the early years, a
committee of various mission representatives was responsible for
Intermissions.
-
For a number of years,
a major mission organization, or a few smaller missions working
together, took the responsibility of sponsoring Intermissions.
-
Due to the decline of
larger major mission organizations in Guatemala, more recently a
committee from various groups/mission agencies has taken the
responsibility for Intermissions.
